The Big Investment in Genesee County's Trails
In an exciting turn for outdoor enthusiasts and commuters alike, the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation has stepped up with a generous grant of $1.03 million earmarked for the improvement and completion of nonmotorized trails in Flint and surrounding areas. This investment aims to promote physical activity through safe walking and biking paths, connecting neighborhoods, schools, and parks across Genesee County.
Connecting Communities, One Trail at a Time
Safety and accessibility are at the forefront of this initiative. As Ridgway White, the Mott Foundation president and CEO, eloquently puts it, “Safe, connected trails and sidewalks are an excellent resource for residents of all ages.” The funding will close gaps in several key projects:
- $280,000 for the Silver Lake Road Trail in Fenton
- $270,000 for the second phase of the Perry Road Trail in Grand Blanc Township
- $330,000 for the Embury Cook Road Trail in Grand Blanc Township
- $150,000 for the Iron Belle Trail Pathway in Burton
Building for the Future
In addition to these projects, the Mott Foundation's collaboration with the Genesee County Metropolitan Planning Commission reflects a broader commitment to improving the region's transportation infrastructure. The “Genesee: Our County, Our Future master plan” emphasizes the necessity of creating an efficient and accessible network. Over the last ten years, more than 19 miles of new trails and sidewalks have already enhanced the area.
Get Involved: Trails Symposium on June 11
Engagement from the community is crucial for the ongoing development of these trails. That's why the upcoming Flint and Genesee County Trails Symposium on June 11 offers a platform for residents and stakeholders to voice their opinions on future expansions. This community-driven event is a vital opportunity to ensure that the trails meet the needs of users.
As Delrico J. Loyd, chairman of the Genesee County Board of Commissioners, states, "This investment in local trail development projects reflects our common purpose and commitment to healthy, livable and safe communities in Genesee County.” Join the movement and make your voices heard as we pave the way to a healthier, more connected future.
